What is the Meaning of Safety?
|
Why do we have a Safety Day?
Whether the topic is ground safety or flight safety, the root word is still

SAFETY.
Many times in our day to day jobs, we become complacent because the job(s) can sometimes become redundant. You hear the old saying,
"I've done this a million times." It is said by the most experienced to the newest CAP Cadet Member. The one thing we should remember
is the newest CAP Member will one day become the experienced CAP Senior Member ... and that is our future.
Let us just say for argument's sake that a way of saving time and effort in doing something in an operation saves you a few hours.
Over the past year, you have taken this "shortcut" in checking your Van or Aircraft nine times, for a savings of 18 hours. The 10th
time you take it, two people are slightly injured. Both seek medical attention. The Safety office has to fill out a form 78 incident
report, which takes up an hours from both members. The accident form is then routed through the appropriate chain of command to
determine whether an investigation is going to take place. costing hours of lost time; all because the safety warning were not adhered
to yet again.
The above incident, at a minimum, is a misshap. This is due to the loss of time of the individual.
What if your shortcut caused the loss of life, a Van with cadets, or
an aircraft with our cadets and senior members?
How about if it resulted in an explosives mishap?
Was it worth it?
Are people's lives worth it?
These are the questions that we have to continually ask ourselves.
I firmly believe that integrity and safety go hand in hand. We have to do what is right even when nobody is looking.
It needs to start with the most junior among us and go right to the top. We have to put a stop to the shortcuts we see happening
in all areas of CAP life, from the cadets at a PT program to our flight lines and aircraft facilities. The warnings,
cautions and notes in our vans and aircraft along with regulations and supplements all stem from the knowledge of subject matter
experts and those of us who have had unfortunate incidents. The guidance is there for a reason ... for us to follow it as written
so we do not have repeat incidents.
Unfortunately, some of us have to have an eye opening experience before we realize the seriousness and the consequences that can happen.
Why Safety day, it is a time where we tell our stories for a reason: so that those without our experience can learn and understand. We all make mistakes, but most are preventable. We just need to slow down, take a step back, and follow the guidance that is in place ... even when nobody is looking! Lets all be safe out there!!!
